November Outdoor Checklist!
Posted on Tuesday, November 12th, 2013 at 1:37 pm by Weblinx
This November, make sure you cross of all your outdoor duties to put your lawn and landscape to bed for the winter season. Here are some reminders:
Continue mowing until the grass stops growing. The final cut of the season should be lower than normal so that leaves and debris can pass through your lawn. Angle cut and/or push mow your lawn for a lasting impression!
Ensure that your irrigation system and backflow device is winterized. Freeze damage to your system can cause pipes to burst and heads or valves to leak. Backflow repairs can be very costly!
Move bulbs and warm season plants indoors to your basement or to a garage space. If we do get a day of sunlight and warm weather, let them acclimate by allowing them to spend the day outside, then bring them back in.
Plant your spring blooming bulbs before Thanksgiving. Some that are deer resistant and work well in St. Louis include Alliums, Daffodils, and Hyacinths.
Disconnect all hoses and water features before the first hard freeze to avoid damage from freezing water inside the pipes.
Fertilize your trees and shrubs using a deep root fertilization process. Fall fertilization assures adequate nutrient storage for the winter. Focusing the injection on the roots will ensure that we are growing the roots to prepare for winter.
Dig up and remove your Mums after they stop blooming.
Remove leaves from the beds and turf. Dowco offers many leaf solutions including blowing, mulching and vacuuming.
Cut back your ornamental grasses anytime now through spring.
General clean up – empty out your hanging baskets and containers. Store clay pots indoors. Remove debris from beds and rake smooth. Clean out pocketed leaves caught in shrub foliage.
