7 Yard Safety Tips
Posted on Friday, September 12th, 2014 at 1:15 pm by Weblinx
Yard safety is a HUGE component of what we talk about at Dowco. We want to prepare our crews for everything that may happen during a day in the life of working outside and in Chesterfield lawns and landscapes! Here are 7 tips that will help protect you if you’re working in your yard this year.
1. Gear Up
If you’ve ever seen a Dowco employee working in your beds or lawn, you’ll notice that they are wearing some or all of the following things:
- long sleeves
- long pants
- hat
- tinted safety glasses
- hearing protection
- sturdy shoes or boots
These items help protect them from the harmful rays of the sun, common lawn and garden pests, chemicals, loud sounds that can damage hearing, objects flying towards their eyes, and objects dropping on their toes.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water. Although it may not seem like it at times, working in the yard or garden is hard work! Replenish the water you sweat out with plenty of liquids and electrolytes to keep you going.
3. Take Breaks
If you start to feel fatigued take a break in the shade or inside in the air conditioning or warmth. Drink a glass of water and eat some fruit to refuel. Also, don’t forget to stretch while you break.
Dowco stretches together as a team every morning at 7:45 before we start our day.
4. Plan Around the Weather
Avoid the hottest part of the day. If you can’t, work in the shaded sections and move when the sun moves. If it’s getting cold outside, remember your cold weather gear!

5. Take Yard Safety Seriously
Make sure all tools are fully sharpened, read all labels and instructions on chemical containers, and stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Protecting your equipment is critical.

6. Have Fun
Involve the whole family by assigning children simple tasks like pulling weeds in open garden areas, watering flowers, and planting bulbs. Teach them yard safety along the way.
7. Sit Back & Enjoy!
Once the yard work and gardening is complete, sit back on the pati o, have an ice cold beverage and enjoy your beautiful landscape. You deserve it!
If you’re like most of us, and you want to skip straight to step 7, then simply call Dowco, and we’ll do the rest!
