Dowco began deep root feeding this week.
Your trees and shrubs are a growing investment that can dramatically increase your property’s value year after year. Fertilizing your prized trees and shrubs provides many benefits such as increased resistance to disease, increased ability to ward off insects, and improved flowering or growth.
This year was evidence that healthy looking plants can suffer under heat/drought conditions. These same plants, under normal amounts of rainfall, may have survived. But, this year, by the time the symptoms were apparent enough to notice it was often too late. Building a strong and healthy root system now by fertilizing and even covering exposed roots with an adequate amount of mulch prior to winter, will go a long way to helping the plant ward off threats next summer.
Timing is essential when it comes to deep root feeding. Feeding in the fall improves root growth. Woody plants can absorb nutrients as long as the soil temperature is above 40°F. Root growth occurs during cool weather even when the foliage appears dormant. Root growth of woody ornamentals is most active in fall and late winter/early spring but slows during hot, summer weather.
In October/November, Dowco’s technicians inject the root system with a liquid fertilizer that is easily absorbed and put to work immediately to increase root health. Technicians treat all shrubs as well as the smaller ornamental and specimen trees. Upon completion, your tech will leave literature on your front door about the services they provided and the health conditions of your current landscaping.
